What if your teenager's phone dies when they need you?

Why a dead phone feels scarier than it used to

A generation ago, children knew their home number because they dialled it every day. Now every number lives inside the phone. When the battery hits zero, your teenager still has their friends, their bus pass and their common sense, but they have lost every way of reaching you. Most of the time the phone has simply died and they are fine. The worry comes from not knowing, and from them having no way to tell you.

Three things to sort out before it happens

1. Learn one number by heartIt is still worth it. Practise one adult's number together until they can say it without thinking. Stress makes memory unreliable, so treat this as the first line, not the only one.
2. Agree a planWhere to go and who to ask if their phone dies: a friend's parent, a shop assistant, staff at the station. Knowing what to say makes asking a stranger for a phone much easier.
3. Set up a backup way to reach youThis is the part ZeroPercent does. It takes about two minutes, and then it is there whenever they need it.

What you see, and what you never see

If you are one of the adults who run your family on ZeroPercent, you see a short, complete list for each person:

• their latest battery percentage, with an honest timestamp
• whether ZeroPercent is set up and ready
• how many backup contacts they have (the count only, never who they are)

You never see location, messages, browsing or app activity. Only the adults who run a family see battery levels.

Low-battery alerts, before it reaches zero

You can choose to get an alert when someone's battery runs low, so you can send a quick "charge your phone" before it dies. Alerts are opt-in and need the iPhone app on their phone, because a browser can't report battery.

How this is different from Life360 and Find My

Life360 and Find My show you where a phone is. That helps while the phone is on, but a phone at 0% stops reporting, so the location you see is wherever it last was. ZeroPercent does something else: it gives your teenager a way to reach you when their phone is off. It never tracks location, so plenty of families use it alongside a location app, and plenty use it instead of one.
